Dr. John Mathews

DR. MATHEWS SPECIALIZES IN MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY utilizing advanced techniques in the area of laparoscopy including gastric bypass, gastric sleeve and the laparoscopic placement of the gastric band.

He is trained in robotic surgery and will be expanding these techniques into bariatric surgery. Dr. Mathews was the first physician in the state to use the robot adjunctively in a bariatric procedure.

Dr. Mathews has been listed in Birmingham Magazine as one of the “Best Docs” for the last six years.

Dr. Mathews is a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, Society for the Surgeon of the Alimentary Tract, the American Cancer Society, Jefferson County Medical Society, Birmingham Surgical Society, the American Society for Breast Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. He is also on the faculty in the Baptist Health Systems’ Surgical Training Program.


Dr. Andrew DeWitt

DR. ANDREW DEWITT IS A BOARD CERTIFIED GENERAL SURGEON who specializes in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery.

During his decade and a half of practicing Bariatric Surgery he has performed over 4000 bariatric procedures.  He studied with pioneering bariatric specialist Henry L. Laws and twice received the Faculty Teaching Award at Carraway Methodist Medical Center that bears Dr. Laws’ name.

Dr. DeWitt has great respect for his patients and understands the physical and emotional toll obesity can take on their lives. For this reason, he and his staff provide the latest in bariatric surgery. As a board-certified surgeon, Dr. DeWitt is dedicated to helping those who are ready to achieve a healthier lifestyle through bariatric surgery. He is affiliated with many professional organizations and local hospitals. In addition, Dr. DeWitt is an Alabama native.

Dr. DeWitt also has extensive experience in Minimally Invasive General Surgery on the bariatric patient.
